Heavy Level 2 Creosote Build Up. This is a great example of what happens when you routinely have a low intensity fire with less that high quality wood. These particles start out small, then build at an exponential rate as the smoke particles have more surface area to cling on to. This is clay liner or terracotta chimney. They require a little bit more delicate touch and inspection. These style chimneys are extremely susceptible to damage from chimney fires. This customer was concerned because it would take about 3-4 cycles in the dryer to get her clothes dry. Her dryer was working fine, but I found what the true cause of the problem was. The vent on her roof was almost 100% blocked. A little bit of level 1 creosote build up. This one wasn't horrible, but still needed cleaning. Here was a dryer vent that just went through the floor of the home and ended in the crawl space. There was no duct work that carried the vent to the outside of the home as per building codes. You can see how much lint had accumulated on the copper water pipes. This dryer vent flex duct had not been attached to the dryer properly. You can see that it had been leaking and blowing lint all over the back of the dryer. Here's a decent clog that I removed from a dryer duct in Prescott. One of our methods for cleaning dryer vents. We try to clean from the inside out whenever we have the chance. This allows us to inspect and fix any issues at the back of the dryer and it allows us to use our shop vac to contain any of the mess that the lint creates when we break it loose.
