IONIZATION SMOKE DETECTORS UNSAFE FOR HIGH ALTITUDE
Both major manufacturers of smoke detectors (Kidde & First Alert) do not recommend installing ionization smoke detectors above 3000’ elevation.
These detectors can be much slower to respond to smoke as compared to photoelectric detectors. Some tests have shown the delay to be up to 10 minutes longer than photoelectric detectors.
Many electricians and contractors are unaware of this new standard and are continuing to install these detectors in Prescott area homes. There is a VERY good chance that your home has ionization detectors installed.
A residential structure fire doubles in size every minute. When these minutes are ticking away, early warning from an appropriately installed photoelectric smoke detector is your best defense to protect your family.
